Heart
disease...
taking
its toll on our health and longevity
Coronary
artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death among men
and women in the United States. It occurs when the vessels
(arteries) that carry blood to the heart become narrowed or
blocked. These blockages slow the flow of blood to the heart.
They are associated with smoking, high blood pressure, high
levels of blood cholesterol, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle.
When the blood flow is significantly reduced or completely
cut off, a heart attack can occur resulting in death or serious
damage to the heart muscle. Many individuals with CAD have
no symptoms.

Coronary

among men and women. |
|
| Early
detection is the key to prevention
When
detected early, chances are good that the progression of coronary
artery disease can be limited and even reversed. Your scan
results will help guide your physician in making heart-healthy
lifestyle changes to reduce your risks. In most cases, this
requires changes in diet, exercise and cholesterol-lowering
therapy. Or, your scan results may show that your arteries
are plaque free, giving you peace of mind.

is the ideal candidate for the EBT ultrafast heart scan?
The EBT ultrafast heartscan is recommended for men age 35+ and women
age 45+ with one or more of the following risk factors:
Family history of
heart disease, past or present smoker, sedentary lifestyle, stressful
lifestyle, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, overweight,

What

If you have heart disease, the EBT Ultrafast Heart Scan can be used
to monitor the success of medical and/or dietary therapy. You may
wish to consult your personal physician to determine the benefits
of the EBT Ultrafast Heart Scan, based on your medical condition.
Why
should I have the EBT Ultrafast Heart Scan?
In many Americans, heart disease goes undetected for years. The
EBT Ultrafast Heart Scan is a simple, safe and effective way to
detect coronary artery disease early. Because the risk of heart
disease increases with age, it is particularly useful in middle
aged adults who do not have symptoms of heart disease.
Do I
need a referral?
A referral is not required, but we do recommend that you discuss
the test with your doctor before scheduling your appointment. We
will send a detailed report to your doctor after the test, if you
wish.
What
happens during the scan?
The test is painless, simple, and safe. It is very similar to a
chest X-ray. All you need to do is lie on the table and hold your
breath for a few seconds.
How
long does it take?
The scan takes only minutes. The entire visit including parking,
registration, the scan and a meeting with one of our health professionals
to review the results takes about an hour.
What
do I wear?
Wear comfortable clothes.
Do I
need to fast?
No. There is no special preparation required.
Will
there be injections?
No.
Will
I be exposed to radiation?
The radiation from an EBT Ultrafast Heart Scan is minimal. It is
equivalent to that of about 3 chest x-rays or a mammogram.
How
is the EBT Ultrafast Heart Scan different from other CT scanners?
Ordinary CT scanners capture images in 1 - 3 seconds. The fastest
spiral or helical CT scanners can acquire images in over a second.
The EBT Ultrafast Heart Scan captures images in as little as 50
milliseconds - it's the only scanner fast enough to attain a clear
picture of the beating heart.
How
does the EBT Ultrafast Heart Scan work?
The EBT Ultrafast Heart Scan acquires high-resolution images of
the heart and its blood vessels to detect the presence and amount
of coronary artery calcium. Coronary artery calcium is a "clinical
marker" for atherosclerosis, the leading cause of coronary artery
disease.
How
long has the EBT been available?
The scanner has been in use primarily at major university teaching
hospitals around the world for over 10 years. Recently the test
has become more accessible to the general public at other health
centers.
Will
the EBT Ultrafast Heart Scan find blockages in my arteries?
The EBT identifies and quantitates the amount of calcified plaque
in the coronary arteries. The amount of calcified plaque is closely
related to the total plaque burden and to the likelihood of blockages
or obstructive coronary disease.
What
if my scan results indicate heart disease?
Your doctor can recommend a treatment plan or will discuss the best
course of action tailored to your individual needs. When detected
early, chances are good that the progression of heart disease can
be limited and even reversed. Your scan results will help guide
your physician in making heart-healthy lifestyle changes to reduce
your risks. In most cases this involves changes in diet, exercise
and cholesterol-lowering therapy. If you don't have a physician,
we can recommend one.
Who
reads my heart scan?
Board-certified physicians with advanced training in cardiac imaging
and electron beam tomography read the heart scans.
Who
will discuss my scan results with me?
A health professional will discuss the scan results with you and
a report will be forwarded to your personal care physician. We encourage
that results be shared with your personal care physician as your
cardiac health is a critical component of your overall well being.
