Dr. Hecht served as Director of Preventive Cardiology, Cardiac Imaging and EBT at the Arizona Heart Institute and Foundation in Phoenix, Arizona before coming to HVI. "We are proud to announce that Dr. Hecht has joined our growing team of premier experts in cardiac and vascular medicine at the Heart & Vascular Institute," said Dr. Jeffery Olin, Director of the Institute. "As an independent facility, our goal from the onset was to provide our patients with the best in early diagnosis and treatment of heart and vascular disease. Dr. Hecht's expertise in cardiac imaging and his emphasis on prevention are a complement to our team." A pioneer in the field of diagnostic and preventive cardiology, Dr. Hecht is an expert in the Electron Beam Tomography (EBT) Ultrafast Heart Scan, the most advanced, non-invasive test that is able to diagnose heart disease in its early stages. In a recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Hecht demonstrated that this test is more effective than traditional cholesterol screenings in predicting coronary artery disease, in women over age 55. Dr. Hecht is President of the Society of Atherosclerosis Imaging and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Invasive Cardiology as well as a consultant to the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, American Society of Echocardiography, American Heart Journal and the American Journal of Cardiology. Dr. Hecht has contributed to more than 100 publications and has taught at the Boston University School of Medicine, the University of California, and the University of Southern California, among many other institutions. He also recently spoke on disease prevention and vascular centers at the 2001 Vascular Centers conference in Atlanta. Dr. Hecht received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where he also completed his internship and a residency. He then completed an internal medicine residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital before becoming a Clinical Fellow in Cardiology at Harvard Medical School's Beth Israel Hospital. 05/31/01 LONG DISTANCE TRAVEL POSES BLOOD CLOT RISKS Travelers should be aware of a potentially deadly medical condition called Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) that poses a serious risk particularly during extended travel. If you plan on traveling you should know the risks, symptoms and how to prevent DVT. DVT results from a blood clot forming in a leg vein. If untreated the clot can dislodge and travel to the lung. This condition is called a pulmonary embolism and is very serious and may even result in death. The likelihood of DVT occurring is increased by extended travel that places a passenger in the same position during a trip as in an airplane or car. In fact, airline coach passengers are particularly vulnerable due to tight, densely packed seating and limited ability to get up and move around. "DVT is a serious problem that all travelers should know about," said Dr. Jeffrey Olin, Director of the Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI) located in Morristown, NJ. "It is preventable if you know your risk, the symptoms and how to lower your chances of developing DVT." Experts at HVI including Dr. Olin and Dr. Michael Jaff, Director of Vascular Medicine, compiled the following information about DVT risks, symptoms and prevention. If you have one or more of the following, you may have a high risk of developing a DVT:
The following symptoms might mean that travelers are suffering from DVT:
Here are several things that travelers can do to reduce their risk of developing DVT:
While fatal DVT is relatively rare, travelers should be aware of the risks and take steps to reduce their chances of developing this condition. For more information on DVT consult the Heart and Vascular Institute at 973.656.0555.
