Overview

Peripheral arterial disease has been inadequately diagnosed and treated by the health care community. Many stable patients with peripheral arterial disease die prematurely from myocardial infarction or stroke. In addition, some progress rapidly to the stage of critical limb ischemia leading to the need for revascularization or, at times, amputation.

Over the last several years there have been tremendous advances in the diagnostic and therapeutic options available to patients with peripheral arterial disease. With the development of sophisticated non-invasive imaging modalities, and minimally invasive endovascular therapies (balloon angioplasty, stents), the approach to the vascular patient has dramatically changed.

This seminar is designed to expose the practicing podiatrist to the wide array of diagnostic tests and therapeutic options for their patients with peripheral arterial disease. The speakers are nationally recognized experts representing vascular medicine, vascular surgery, interventional radiology, and magnetic resonance angiography.

This continuing medical education activity is intended for podiatry specialists who must manage patients with concomitant vascular disorders. The audience will include podiatrists and physicians who are involved with the care of patients with vascular disease.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the relationship between podiatric issues and vascular medicine.
  • Appreciate the serious morbidity and mortality associated with peripheral arterial disease.
  • Develop an algorithm for the diagnosis of patients with vascular disease.
  • Decide upon the ideal treatment for these patients, including exercise, pharmacotherapy, surgical revascularization, endovascular therapy, and experimental trials in angiogenesis.
